Last week, Sister Mary took Sam, Caitlin and I to Baggot Street in Dublin. Baggot Street is the home to Catherine McAuley...
The Venerable Mother Catherine Elizabeth McAuley (29 September 1778 – 11 November 1841) was an Irish nun, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831.
The Order has always been associated with teaching, especially in
Ireland, where the nuns taught Catholics (and at times Protestants) at a
time when education was mainly reserved for members of the established Church of Ireland.
We got to see the burial site of Catherine, and a garden next to it. There was a wall built where people have donated money, and there was a donation from Carlow University, which is my school. There was a beautiful fountain, filled with water from each place a Sister of Mercy came from, reaching across the garden. Also there was a very pretty church we got to see, and Catherine's old room in the building. It was a fun day. We got to meet one of Sister Mary's friends, a fellow Sister of Mercy, who baked fresh DELICIOUS scones for us. Yum.
